August 2, saw The Boxing Shop Amateur boxing team take part in the annual South East Qld Titles at Beenleigh Arena.
Fist up we had Mitchell Coomer, who was competing in the light flyweight division,against Qld champion Luke Toope from Bethania Boxing club.The Bout was a rematch and Mitch was out to turn the tables on his opponent who outpointed him earlier in the year."Mitchell boxed very well and stuck to the game plan" said head coach Gareth Williams. The bout ended with a 2 point win going to Mitchell.
Bout 2 for The Boxing Shop showed a 4th win in a row going to "The desTOIer" Toi Duong."We had to give some weight away for this fight to go ahead and once again Toi came away with a very convincing win over his heavier opponent from the fighting fit gym.
Our 3rd bout was the very experienced Sam Leone who has recently joined our gym from the Australian Institute of sport.In Sam's first outing for our team he did some good things that weve been working on in the gym.Sam was outpointed on the day but big things are expected from Sam towards the end ofthe Year.
Our 4th Bout was in the 69kg catergorie,with Dave Thompson coming up against the previously unbeaten David Lockhart from Sunnybank Boxing club."Dave boxed brilliantly,moving on angles,turning his opponent and scoring with 3 punch combinations and he was getting stronger as the fight progressed....Dave is unbeaten this year and all his hard work is really paying off"said Williams.
17 year old Heavyweight (under 91kg) Gareth Bamin was next,who has recently accepted an invitation to be part of the Centre of excellance NTID Boxing programme.Gareth didnt have an opponent in his age and weight catergorie so we decide to step him up to the A division against senior opposition."we were drawn a 23 year old who has had twice as many bouts as Gareth,but our team has ultimate faith in big G's ability and maturity and we had no doubts that he would do the job". Gareth went on to win the fight 11-4 against a very good boxer. "this kid can go all the way in Boxing,which ultimately means Olympic games medals".
Tom Wakely was our final bout of the night.In only his third fight Tom looked exceptional,with fast movement and controlled aggresion which took him to a very comfortable third win in as many outings.

Sparring Under Aussie Champs guidance

For all those interested in starting sparring and improving your skill levels,come and try our Early bird boxing classes from 5.30am-6.30am Tuesdays and Thursdays.
2 time Australian Light welterweight champion,Chris McCullen will be your coach on these mornings.
Tuesdays programme is designed at Skill develpoment through padwork with your trainers and also conditioning, on Thursday Mornings we are inviting all those who would like to sparr under the guidence of The Aussie Champ.

Ladies only classes start at 6.30am and Tuesdays is designed at Boxing fitness where on Thursday's you have the choice of Training in the Ladies only sparring class with Chris or in the Boxing fitness class with our Female trainer Fenella.

"In House Competition Sparr"

A great effort by everyone involved in our first "In house competition sparr".

All those boxing were great and everybody really enjoyed the exhibition and it really helped to create a really good club atmosphere.

A special Mention to PJ Freehill who is returning to Ireland shortly but has guaranteed us that he'll be back to stay (I heard a little whisper that PJ and Jan/Joe have already done a deal that they would like to competition sparr each other in the under 81kg catergorie when he returns from Ireland).

Also i'd like to congratulate all the girls that were involved, Kate,Rach (or Skill as she would prefer to be called) Lee and Janeene. You Guys boxed great and really showed great spirit and determination as well as a great friendship before and after the bouts (i know that you girls would beat lots of boys out there!!).

Thanks Everyone for your great support and we look fwd to our next Competition Sparring day.

Novice Titles - Video and Cogratulations

Congratulations to The Boxing Shop Amateur Boxing Team who represented at The Novice Titles in Brisbane on April 5th, 2008. Our Boxers Tom Wakerly (91kg in video) Toi, Troy, Jack, Lil' Pete and Mitchell all performed extremely well, with Tom, Toi and Little Pete bringing home the Gold. Great effort Lads!

Old School Fight Camp II

"Old School Fight Camp " is here again.
16 Boxers will train like a title fighter for 1 month,with a full contact competition sparr at the end of the camp.
These Boys will train,diet,motivate and fight each other,just how fighters do it!!

In our last camp we had one guy who lost 14.9 kg in 4 weeks,and this is the discipline and dedication that it takes to be a real fighter.
Requirements for fight camp are to be able to run 2.5km's on day 1 and also have some beginner Boxing experience. (not open to people who have already had a compettive boxing bout).

Pictured above is the Auckland Warriors Under 20's NRL Squad after a hard boxing training session with Gareth, Dave and Huia. The pre-season training camp for the squad became an opportunity to demonstrate some real heart and physical resilience for the lads.

This up and coming team are managed and coached by New Zealands great legends Dean Bell and Tony Iro who have an impeccable reputation for excellence in the sport of Rugby League. The Boxing Shop Team would like to wish the boys all the best for the upcoming season, and welcome some of the future stars to the game.

A Good turn out at 5.15 am and all the boys were informed that they have to be disciplined for the whole camp i.e watch diet,limit alcohol intake, train everyday and make weight in four weeks time.

The Boxing Shop is Victorious in Gladstone

Dave Thompson and "Jimmy" James Whitbourne travelled up to Gladstone on Saturday night to take on 2 very handy local boxers.
"its always a big ask to travel away and come home with the points"said Head coach of "The Boxing Shop" Gareth Willaims.
Thompson was Outstanding for a young man having only his fifth fight where he showed maturity and class in the ring from the opening bell.
Dave won the fight with the final score being 19-6,which is a very convincing win."his Punches were crisp and delivered very precisely in what was a very pleasing result for our squad".
Jimmy James was in his 53rd Amateur Boxing Bout and looked very,very sharp.He Boxed on the Back foot and made his opponent walk into his punches,which was very pleasing for his trainer as "this is what weve been working on for weeks and Jimmy executed the plan perfectly" said Gareth.
"Overall I am very Proud of my Boys in the way that they were extremely professional,in and out of the ring and there Boxing performances were fantastic".

Since moving to Griffith University at the Nathan Campus the Boys have a new team to represent and are doing all the students and staff of Griffith extremely Proud.

Boxing Brisbane on the rise

Boxing in Brisbane is on the increase.
More and more people everyday and from all walks of life are becoming hooked on Boxing training as a means of fitness,self defence and also to learn new skills.

"we are currently training stock brokers,Labourer's,musician's,athletes and lots of different people who have totally different back grounds" said Gareth Williams,head trainer of "The Boxing Shop".
"Since our Opening (20/2/07) we have already introduced 3 more classes than we originally expected to run,due to the overwhelming response from the General public.The difference is that we teach everybody the correct skills in attack and defence rather than running your standard boxing for fitness class and no one is ever pressured to step in to the ring to fight".

Stamping Out the School Bully

How true is the above phrase?

When a kid at school is getting bullied,he/she becomes afraid and scared (acting like a victim) this makes the "Bully" feel more powerfull and they thrive on the feeling of Power.
When a kid shows no fear and carries its self in a strong and confident way,then the school "Bully" doesn't seem to come around too often.

This is why Boxing is such a great sport for kids to be involved in.It gives them defensive skills,attacking skills (if they ever need to use them as a self defence tool) and more importantly,Boxing gives all kids a huge self confidence lift where they do not need to worry about other kids picking on them.
